The Books I want to Read Jan - June 2024
Everything I'm planning on reading during the first half of the year
I often get ask how I decide what books I want to read. I don’t have a physical planner or any other sophisticated techniques for organising my reading - I just have an ongoing list on my phone where I add all the books I want to read, split into books that are already published and upcoming releases. I add titles to this list whenever I come across a book that interests me.
I follow several people on Instagram for book recommendations, as well as keeping my eye on what my favourite authors are reading. If I enjoy a book, I look up if the author has written anything else that interests me, or scroll through lists of similar books. I’m constantly adding to my list, and also constantly adding to my physical pile of books to read. I don’t envision a time where I’m stuck for something to read, as there is simply so much that I want to read (let’s not mention the fact that I also want to re-read about half the books I own).
I am, however, trying to be more sensible about acquiring new books to add to this ever growing pile. I don’t have time to read everything, and although I love a glossy hardback, they are expensive and I can wait for paperbacks if I’m not going to immediately read them. I’ve been guilty in the past of buying books on their release dates, only to read them a year later.
Bearing this in mind, I’ve made this list more realistic than the 50+ books that I initially had listed below. Last year I read between 3 - 10 books a month, and I also need to factor in the books I’ll be reading for my local book club. So here are 25 books that I’m going to prioritise over the first half of 2024 - including new releases, books I already own that are waiting to be read and books on my list to buy.
